Grade Point Average (GPA) is the standard metric used by schools, universities, and employers to evaluate academic performance. Understanding the mathematics behind GPA calculation is essential for students tracking their progress and academic standing.

Unweighted GPA Scale

On a standard unweighted 4.0 scale, letter grades are assigned the following point values: * **A:** 4.0 | **B:** 3.0 | **C:** 2.0 | **D:** 1.0 | **F:** 0.0 *(For +/- grades, schools typically add or subtract 0.3 points, e.g. B+ = 3.3, B- = 2.7).*

The GPA Weighted Formula

GPA is not a simple average of your grades. It is a weighted average based on course credit hours. The formula is:

GPA = Sum of (Grade Points × Course Credits) / Total Credits

Let's look at a student's semester grades as an example:

Course Grade Grade Points Credit Hours Quality Points (Points × Credits)
Calculus I A (4.0) 4.0 4 16.0
Physics Lab B (3.0) 3.0 1 3.0
English 101 B (3.0) 3.0 3 9.0
Total - - 8 28.0

To find the GPA, divide the total quality points by the total credit hours: GPA = 28.0 / 8 = 3.50.
