What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
BMI is a mathematical estimate of body fatness based on an individual's weight and height. It is used as a screening tool to categorize people into underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obese brackets.
The BMI Formula
BMI is computed by dividing an individual's weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters:
BMI = Weight (kg) / [Height (m)]²
BMI Categories
- Underweight (BMI < 18.5): May indicate malnutrition or other health concerns.
- Normal Weight (BMI 18.5 - 24.9): Associated with lower health risks.
- Overweight (BMI 25.0 - 29.9): Indicates increased risk for cardiovascular strain.
- Obese (BMI > 30.0): Elevated risk for conditions such as high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.
